I have Dish Network service at home (Lake City) and I would like to add the service to my fish house on Mille Lacs....can someone tell me what I need to do to make this happen! I contacted Dish Network at they keep telling me I need to have a "snowbird" account which is turning off my home service and activating the service up north. I don't want to go that route as often there are people at home who will want to watch tv there plus that sounds like a pain in the butt! Apparently there is a "smart card" in the receiver that knows the proximity of service area and just taking my receiver along from home will not work. Any help would be greatly appriciated as I'm about ready to switch to Direct TV over this mess!
do your self a huge favor! Switch to directv! They are better by along shot and there is no issue of bringing your reciever from home and hooking it up. They encourage you to do so. you just need a directv dish that goes with your particular reciever. there are several kind of reciever. standard reciever needs a standard dish. hd reciever need hd dish..... or the settings to be changed so the reciever recognizes the proper dish. It is the easiest thing in the world to have satellite at the fish house. be prepared to take it all home with you every weekend as houses with a dish on them are usually break in bait! I take everything home including the tv. people who leave thier houses full of goodies are only promoting easy money to thieves. sadly we have alot of them and there is little we can do to prevent the F*$%^$ 'rs from doing it, except leave your house empty and police your neighborhood!! Good luck and good fishing!
They are full of chit about what area your dish is in... they pull from the same satelites whether your in the TC or on Mille Lacs.... get a dish, (same as you got at home) mount on your house and aim. Bring your box from home.
Guk, Contrary to Eyecoholic's opinion I have found dish network TV to be good. You will need an additional reciever and dish for your fishhouse which will have it owns smart card. It will be important to know the reciever number: "R00........" for the fishhouse and reference it when talking to dish network about any issues you may have at the fishhouse as they can be dealt with seperately. 1.)You will have to pay an additional $7.00 per month to have the additional reciever. 2.)You will need the zip code for the nearest mailing address in order to get the correct setting for your dish. Degrees, Elevation and Azimuth. 3.)When setting up the dish on your existing account you tell dish network that the reciever will be at a portable dwelling that you own. A fishouse that is moved out on to the lake when it freezes. Tell them that there is no mailing address at this dwelling as it is portable. You will not need to pay as if it is a seperate account. 4.)You can temporarily deactivate the reciever for a minimum of 30 days during months of no use and not be charged the $7.00. A phone call to dish and in 30 minutes the dish is activated again. Everyone has their horror stories whether it is a Ford or Chev, a Remington or Winchester. If you currently have dish I think you can make it happen at the fishhouse with minimal effort. If I can help further send me a private message and I'll shoot you my phone number.
Howdy Guk, I also prefer DISH Network and we have it in our two lakeshore homes on Malmo Bay. There is an excellent local DISH Network /TV dealership in Aitkin that can give you service and advice too... Yes, You will need a separate receiver for your fish house which has its own smart card.
DISH does have a 'Snowbird' plan -- but that is for people who go south for some of the winter and it is very reasonable. My Mother uses it if she goes south.
Guk, You might be able to save a little money by asking Malmo Mike's contact if they have a used dish you can pick up from them. I've found that from time to time these dish dealers will have used satelite dishes laying around in their shop. You would still need to get a box through Dish Network though. Good luck!
Thanks everyone! I just purchased a new receiver and have an extra identical dish at home that I will be mounting on the fish house...hopefully all goes smooth!
Howdy Guk, WOW -- Good Job Steve, Sounds like you have it all covered. It is easy to align and point the DISH. Enberg's TV is an excellent source and they priovuide great home service. We swear by them and they know their stuff.
I hope it works out great for you. We have two DISH HD receivers and love it. My work shop rocks with DISH HD and Sports programming. So I am spoiled. I will be watching to see how much fun you have with a good set up. Here is Guk:
