Good Blog again Steve! Way to keep the word going. This will only end if you/we keep it alive!!! The MN DNR will sooner or later have to stand up to this. Or the tribes will keep taking and taking... And not only Mille Lacs.
I just got my comment disallowed from the column, cuz I used the treaty itself to show that only the president can change the treaty dynamics, (netting)
I'm sure with a politician like our president (who's looking for votes this year) could make an informed decision if he was given enough voter input, if you get my drift............
I just sent a message to the president concerning the need for his attention on this matter.
If you'ld care to join my voice, shoot him a message.
Obviously, in hind sight, I agree the last words of the blog could be taken the wrong way.
That said, as the Tribune Editors agreed with, we all know I didn't mean anyone should get shot! The Editors, like everyone else, understood the intended meaning...meaning that "Mille Lacs fans" take action. Decide now. Key word, with the same intent as the ones I deleted, is decide.
'Nuff said. I stand by my words and do so with no guilt but instead a passion 2nd to none, to end this mess.

I just received a response from President Obama from the message I sent him on the netting issue:
Good afternoon --
Earlier this week, it looked like Congress would go home for the holidays without preventing a tax increase that would mean millions of American families would have about $40 less in each paycheck.
But then something pretty incredible happened.
It began when we asked everyone to show us how that missing $40 would affect them and their families. In a matter of hours thousands of vivid, powerful stories from Americans of all ages, all backgrounds, from every corner across the country were pouring in. For some, $40 means dinner out with a child who's home for the holidays. For others it means a tank of gas or a charitable donation. In just two days, tens of thousands of Americans were making their voices heard.
You spoke up. Your voices made all the difference.
Thanks to you, Congress reached an agreement to extend the payroll tax cut. On top of that, vital unemployment insurance will continue for millions of Americans who are looking for work.
Yesterday I had the chance to meet a few of the folks who took to the web to make this happen.
Take a moment to hear what they had to say:
We aren't done fighting for the middle class. When Congress returns, they need to keep working to reach an agreement that will extend this tax cut and unemployment insurance for all of 2012 -- without drama or delay.
That's just the beginning of our work ahead in the new year to put more Americans back to work, restore middle-class security, and ensure that folks who work hard and play by the rules get a fair shot.
More than ever I'm confident that, together, those are goals we can achieve.
Thank you, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays,
President Barack Obama

Minnesota is home to some of the best lakes imaginable. Mille lacs being the second largest in the land of 10,000 is nothing short of remarkable. although some could argue the fact that it is the second largest, not many would argue that it is or "used" to be the "walleye capital" of the world. Hmmmm, now sit back for a minute and think about that. Mille lacs USED to be the walleye capital of the world. In my experience i believe that there are about 5 maybe 6 times in 21 years that me or my family has taken a limit out of mille lacs. with the new and improved slot limit, obviously that has become harder and harder. Yet the bands of "native americans" have a grandfathered right to use "banned" gill nets to harvest thousands of pounds of walleye each spring during and shortly after the spawn. I personally have no problem with the "native americans harvesting fish each year. The problem i do have is in the method and timing. So for all of us "american anglers" we harvest walleyes using more.... humane ways. Humane ways such as fishing rods, line, and a hook. Just to keep it simple we earn the fish we catch. Now to address the harvest of us american anglers. Catch and release is what is important. I personally have no problem practicing this. although others would and do have a problem with a catch and release system. What i believe would be invaluable to the fishery known as mille lacs is a protected slot of anything above 17 inches and a daily limit of 2 walleyes 10 to 16 inches long. one fish over 28 inches. Now for the harder part the possesion limit.... 4 fish at one time, with one fish being over 28. so Three fish in ones possession and 2 fish for a daily limit. Native american harvest. If there are 8 to 10 bands that have the treaty right to net fish i would believe that the treaty would at this point have to be re-written. instead of the use of gill nets during the spring spawn the native americans would be allowed to take 15,000 pounds of fish per band. but using means like spears through the ice, and fishing like the rest of us. that means an "improvised slot limit" for the native americans. native americans could take any walleyes over 16 inches to 25 inches releasing all perch, norther, cisco, eelpout, and muskie back to the water immediately. continue to catch fish in that manner untill each band has filled their harvest for that year. Nothing in the world is fair. but this would save the fishery. if anyone has any comments questions of concerns let me know for now----- ixriceman
Unfortunately, we can't just change the netting with logic. Or even good sense.
The only person that can make a change is the President of the United States due to the terms of the 1837 Treaty.
Here' the way article 5 of the treaty reads:
ARTICLE 5.
The privilege of hunting, fishing, and gathering the wild rice, upon the lands, the rivers and the lakes included in the territory ceded, is guarantied to the Indians, during the pleasure of the President of the United States.
