I keep seeing "Ordinals" all over crypto Twitter but still don’t get what they actually are. Are they like Bitcoin NFTs? How do they work if Bitcoin doesn’t have smart contracts like Ethereum? Someone explain this like I’m five!
I felt the same way until I read Paybis’ guide on Ordinals https://paybis.com/blog/glossary/ordinals/ . Here’s the simple breakdown: Ordinals are unique digital artifacts inscribed directly onto individual satoshis (the smallest units of Bitcoin) using Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrade. Unlike Ethereum NFTs that live in smart contracts, Ordinals are embedded directly into Bitcoin transactions through a process called inscription. This means the data becomes a permanent part of Bitcoin’s blockchain without needing any protocol changes. The guide explains how this works through witness data storage, and it completely changed how I view Bitcoin’s capabilities. I’ve even inscribed a few Ordinals myself now!
