Hey guys. I'm a newbie to Mille Lacs and relatively new to ice fishing.
I'm wondering if any of you can help with some tips on lures to get a starter tackle box set up for myself and each of my kids. We will be targeting walleyes.
Ron - I am more of the "old school" but have had continued success on Mille Lacs jigging with 1/8 KastMasters (Gold, Silver, BLue/Silver,Green/Silver) or your typical Swedish Pimple (again gold has always been best for me). Now, the local guide experts will be able to fill you in on the latest and greatest. Listen to Bob, he knows the lake better than anyone (IMO).
I always jig one line and have a set line with a bobber. RED hook and shiners are the ticket. Load up your boxes with plenty of #4 or #6 red hooks. Usually have my camera down and I am always amazed at how often I get fish to come in via the jig only to slide over and pounce on my shiner.
Before xmas is my chance to load up on tackle. My wife will allow me to buy anything as long as it is a "present" for the KIDS.
Also, what lb test do you typically use? And do you use the same on your rattle reels? The house I bought has the rattle reels already set up, but they have VERY heavy line on it.
And remember if fishing is slow you could always go after some snipe out on the mille lacs tundra..................best times are from 1 to 3 in the morning, out in the "nomans land" area of the lake . If you don't have a burlap sack to catch them in, a pillow case works also...good luck ,they taste great.
Thanks Sculpin. I've ordered a few cases of peas. I'll have you over for the big walleye/snipe fry we are having at the fish house in late march or early april.
Sounds good Ron, I'll bring the beer..........don't forget to bring your hammerfor when you are using those peas .
all kidding aside go with 6 # mono on your rods, and some sort of tipup line for your rattle reels with about 10' of 6# mono leader attached . Good luck , you will figure things out in notime...........
I like to use any spoon that has a rattle in them I lean towards the gold and orange but always mix it up when it gets slow. My best advice would be to get ready to drill a ton of holes and move often. Good luck!!! If nothing works head to Buzzy's always a good time!!!
