Hard water no doubt! I don't have a nice enough boat to fish on Mille Lacs but I do have a Ice Castle and a Clam!!!

There's just something about pulling Walleye through the hole that open water doesn't have. Plus having the opportunity to cook and watch the game in the process. What's better than rattle reels waking you up at 2:30a with a 5lb eelpout. I can hardly wait.

Malmo Mike votes for open water fishing on Mille lacs; but it is a tough choice.

The challenge of Open Water on Mille Lacs:
The mobility of open water fishing on the lake, using drifting or trolling presentation techniques and the sensitive graphite rod technology make a good walleye catch one heckuva event. Mille lacs is one greatest walleye lakes for all of these reasons.
I got a 29-incher this past season on my HMG graphite rod that I will not soon forget.

I still love and enjoy ice fishing tremendously -- it is a great time on the lake.
Again you cannot beat a great day on the lake.
You can always party in a nice fish house. In my boat we head to Hunter's Point.
Ice fishing has advanced so much in recent years with modern fish houses and Ice Castle wheel houses, Vexilar sonars, Dave Genz and St Croix ice fishing rods, Clam portables and the very effective jigging rigs from Lindy and Northland. WOW.
Bring it on soon!

That's an easy one, Nick.....
In the summer, I like fishing open water, cuz it's too hard to find ice.
In the winter, I like to fish ice, cuz it's too hard to find open water.

Ice seems to be more fun.  Almost like a surprise every fish.  My girls and I get alot of 1 on 1 time and I can teach them what I know about ice fishing and the joys and danger awareness  that comes along with it.

Bottom line is that we're getting ready for the best ice season in 15 years! Just drove around the lake and it's freezing pretty flat right now.
It's the best perch population we've had since the DNR introduced the Muskies to supplement the Northerns that were dying off. The walleyes have been reproducing in record numbers, because the indian nets haven't got the females before they had a chance to lay thier eggs in 3 years.
There's gonna be alot of keepers this year.........

Great reply T2J,
Jon I am going to be on your launch (during open water) and following your truck during ice fishing season for fun and fish! I sure hope that the walleye reproduction can continue to be successful. Plus those walleyes got have bait to feed on...
Go Walleye. Ban the tribal netting.
Malmo Mike was here...

Open only because we have a new Ranger Boat and just a portable ice house. If we had a permanent one, I might have a different answer.

It is back to the old slot limit effective December 1st per the Mille Lacs Lake Messenger:

Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:50

Walleye anglers who fish Mille Lacs Lake are reminded that effective Dec. 1, the regulation allows them to keep four walleye up to 18 inches, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. All walleye between 18-and 28-inches must be immediately released. One walleye more than 28 inches is allowed in possession. Information about fishing regulations is available at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/newsroom/index.html

Ha, ha on me.

It was an online copy and paste faux pas de jour -- no doubt.
How is that for a parlez-vous moment?

The duplication did not show up until I posted the message?
Weird Go figure.

The walleys are laughing I am sure.

I am working on a January Ice Fishin Trip home to Malmo
and Hunters ... and reserve some ice house time on the lake... it may just happen.
In the meantime I am watching the walleyes:
