While getting the mail yesterday I found a big envelope from a guide customer Roger Gruber. Well here Roger sends me a 1950's lake map - booklet of Mille Lacs Lake........what a treasure!
It's in great shape....you should read some of the phone numbers listed for the resorts!
If you look near Hunters Point on the map...you will see Portside Resort listed!
This would be the "original" Portside Resort that was owned and operated by my uncle Fred Saumer and his wife Rose! Pretty cool stuff...............Portside Resort was just north of The White Cap Inn at the S curve in the road heading towards Nitti's Hunters Point.

We all remember the 'old road' that went by way of Opstead that was later superceded by the new Eastside Hwy 47 and Hwy 18 upgrades. . There was an Opstead general store there... We still have the Opstead Baptist church of course...
Cool. Yes Fishers still has one wooden launch of the cedar strip variety I believe...Greg and Neil Fisher have kept it up pretty well too.
At one time Fishers just had 3 wooden launches like the one in the map. One Fred drove, the other one Mel and later Merv nd Randy drove, then they had a green one that Greg Fisher drove. After they sold the green one to the other side of the lake, I started working on the other two with Dean, Randy, Larry amongst others. Fred drove the biggest one for 28 years until the boat's retirement 6 years ago. They still have it's sister boat #2 in use. A 383 Dodge powered single screw.
Those wood launches need alot of maintenance to be able to pass inspection every year. They're made of redwood, But our replacement hull was Douglas Fir.
Hey Bob, I just bought a cabin at old archers resort. I have been looking for anything on that resort. Old pictures, maps, etc. Not sure where you are at, but man if I could ever swing by and take a good high quality digital picture that I could blow up that would be awesome. Or if you can take one and post that would be great. Just trying to decorate with old memorabilia. So fun looking at old map like that!

"I just call it home"!
I have heard the term Windy Johnson's but it was referred to as a North/South drift between Picard and Lakeside Reef. That was considered quite the endeavor from what I understand but was a reliable drift for fish. I always like hearing stories from the old days. Helps to keep things in perspective.
