Mille Lacs 2019 Ice Out - too early to tell?
Permalink

Hello East Side Fishermen and Friends,

I am certainly hoping for a normal ice out time frame but that does not seem likely given the amount of snow cover and overall ice depth. This looks more like a record year like 2013.

I am hoping to get some observations form Chapman's or Hunter's Point although it is still very early in melting process.

Here is a past record of ice out Late years and Early years:

We need the ice melt dance and Hula Girl at Hunter's Point please,

Here is the goal for Eastside:

Update Tuesday 03-26-19:

There is some slow snow melt occurring on Mille Lacs Lake proper; still a long ways to go....

  • Isle Bay has more ice surface available promoting sun exposure;
  • Fiddlesticks has some grass now exposed and showing;
  • Snake River is almost reopened.
  • Not much change at Twin Pines Resort in Garrison but they took their shore bridge out:

Sunday March 31st: A pretty cloudy and overcast day at Mille Lacs. Limited melting today but the Snake River (East of Isle) is really running high and fast. WOW. We need some medium melting and some sunny days to get the thaw going. Come Walleye.

Some shore water on the ice at Appledorn's dock area.

Hello Fishermen,

Finally some clearer sky conditions and genuine melting opportunity early this week.  It looks favorable as we have 'blue' ice visible and some water forming on bays and top of the ice.

We may get an opener yet!

Good luck,

Malmo Mike MM

The Bomber boat will be ready.

Hello Eastside Fishermen!

New snow on Mille Lacs and northern communities on Thursday April 11-12th.

Fiddlestix near Isle is covered ~~ so one can estimate at 4-5 inches of new snow.

These April storms are nasty so more melting before we get any rela open water on the big lake.

Time to hang out at the Pine Inn.

Hello to Gomer.

Hello East Side Gang,

We have some pretty good, steady melting and ice is getting much darker today, Saturday 4-20-19.

Isle bay has some water on the ice as does Sunset Bay and Appledorn's.

We need the Mermaid team to come in at Hunter's Point please.

Red Door Marina looks like LOW water level.

We get some open water areas soon.

Malmo Mime MM

See you at the opener.

Ice Out Progress Report:

1. Isle Bay is open water today at Chapman's and Hunter Winfield Resort's.

2. Sunset Bay and Win Pines (Garrison Bay) significant shoreline line open water areas.

3. Dark ice everywhere; a good blow will break it up soon.

Have fun,

Malmo Mike MM

Report for Thursday 4-25-19:

1. Isle Bay completely open water; clear water at Hunter Winfield's and Chapman's dock areas.

2. Garrison Bay & Twin Pines Ice flow 500+ yards off shoreline;

3. Hunter's point marina is filled up with ice flow from north west;

4. ETA: Ice could go out in next 3-4 days if a favorable breeze breaks up the ice flow.

BAD NEWS it may head to Bobber's house today!

Malmo Mike is ready at my shore. Lotsa rocks to slow it down.

Update for Friday 04-26-19:

1. Ice flow has blown to South and East Side bays! It will not be long now!

2. Isle bay has significant floating ice at Chapman's Resort and Hunter Winfield's shoreline areas.

3. Hunter;s Point Marina is also full of the floating ice pack; Garrison Bay is now open water due to moderate wind and ice flow movement south.

4. Stronger wind forecast for Saturday that could break up the floating ice.

5. No ice seen on shoreline areas thus far.

ETA Ice Out could occur by Sunday or Monday as temperature is 51 degrees today!

Malmo Mike MM

Hello Mille Lacs Fishermen!

Hello to East Side Gang!

Malmo Mike says ICE OUT today. Isle to Garrison is clear and unobstructed open waters.

It is NOT official yet from the Mille Lacs Messenger, but we have all essential criteria for ICE OUT on Mille Lacs Lake at 4:00 PM Sunday 4-28-19:

1. Isle Bay is OPEN water; ice free as far as sight lines allow.

2. Garrison Bay all OPEN Water; no ice visible at all from sight lines.

3. Aerial view shows lake clear and navigable Isle to Garrison.

4. Still some small ice floating but mostly near east side shoreline due to winds.

Now I am in trouble, EH?

Glen and Dour Ertl whaddya think?

Bob Carlson what do ya think?

Jon TTJohnie What do ya think?

Have fun,

Floats my boat.

Malmo Mike

You are right Moonski.

I will plant a few under water mines for gill netters.

It is nice to see Open Water after a tough winter.

It's always more pleasant to see clear water without ice. Now in a place where I live, there is no ice on rivers and lakes, but I'm still waiting for a moment when I can go fishing because each time there is something that makes it impossible. At the beginning of spring, I was ill, and now all that thing with the virus. But I try to stay positive, besides I have time to renovate my equipment and other stuff. I've already bought a new reel, and now I'm looking for a new thermos. I always take it with me, because when I like to go fishing and have a camp for a few days. And with a campfire, we can make hot drinks and keep them in a thermos. My old one is not in good condition, and when I was looking for a new one, I came across this review https://under-the-open-sky.com/best-thermos/ . There are the best thermoses in 2020 with a detailed description, and there I found which one to purchase. I think it would be a great idea to share it with you because maybe it'll be useful for someone. It's one of the best I've found, becuase it has all the pros and cons, and it'll for sure help someone to choose.
